The United States (U.S.) has seen a strong wave of Omicron related cases emerge in the last week. Due to this, a lot of cabin crew and airline staff including ground personnel, airport management, and more have been affected. United Airlines and Delta, two of the prominent airlines in the U.S. have cancelled hundreds of flights on Christmas Eve due to the shortage of employees.
According to a Bloomberg report, United has cancelled over 100 flights while Delta has cancelled 90 flights.
“Delta teams have exhausted all options and resources -- including rerouting and substitutions of aircraft and crews to cover scheduled flying -- before cancelling around 90 flights for Friday," Delta said in an emailed statement Friday.
“We’ve unfortunately had to cancel some flights and are notifying impacted customers in advance of them coming to the airport," United said. “We’re sorry for the disruption and are working hard to rebook as many people as possible and get them on their way for the holidays.”
The rush in travel and demand for flights during the festive season such as Christmas increases in the United States. Due to Omicron spread, this festive season in the country is going to be harder than many people anticipate.
