The authorities of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport are reportedly busy in solving an issue of carpet v/s no-carpet in Terminal 3 of the airport.
In 2010, the authorities spread carpets on the floors of Terminal 3, and since then there were frequent complaints from passengers about the slow movement of trolley bags through the carpets. The staff of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) also said their dog squad find it challenging to walk through the carpet.
Subsequently, IGI airport authorities reportedly ventured into the process of removing the 170,000 square meters of carpets, among which the 30% of the work is completed. The complete removal will take another year.
After removal, the floors ended up being too slippery for both passengers and the CISF staff to walk. CISF resumed to appointing a special committee that can suggest changing of the shoes of the CISF members to anti-slippery ones. Passengers continue to trip down while walking and complaints were raised.
Changing of shoes of CISF staff is likely to cost between INR 35-40 lakhs, which the committee found to be expensive to proceed.
Now, the authorities have reportedly adopted some anti-skid measures to make the floor non-slippery. According to the authorities, the floor matches the international standards and is usable under any circumstance. The authorities said that it will dispose the non-usable parts of the removed carpets, but will still find a way to reuse the remaining part. Although the cost of carpet installation is not known, it is a part of INR 6750 crores of the total project cost of establishing Terminal 3.
Although not many details are available about the anti-skid measures adopted by the airport, making the floors anti-skid is a piece of good news for the passengers.
