IndiGo to Wrap Up Kolkata-Hong Kong Route After Seeing Poor Commercial Response

Web Stories

Barely after two months of launching a new flight between Kolkata and Hong Kong, the popular low-cost carrier IndiGo has stopped its flights to the city. It is worth noting that Hong Kong has been a sensitive region for travel since the last few months because of the protests ongoing there. Hence, seeing low demand on the route, IndiGo has decided to do away with its Kolkata-Hong Kong route. As per a PTI report, IndiGo will suspend its operations on the route starting November 6, 2019.

Situation Worsens in Hong Kong Over Turmoil

The protests in Hong Kong started back in June 2019, over the issue of an extradition bill. These extradition bills would have allowed some criminals to be extradited to the Chinese mainland for trials and the Hong Kong citizens did not take this well. The protest which began against the bill has now grown into an anti government movement. An IndiGo spokesperson also said that the airline had been seeing poor commercial performance on this route.

IndiGo to Think of Other Routes Connecting to Hong Kong

The operations on the route connecting Kolkata and Hong Kong began on August 20 and the route has been wrapped up, in less than 2 months. It is also worth noting that IndiGo connects India to Hong Kong through a Bengaluru-Hong Kong flight as well. IndiGo spokesperson has also said that the airline is ideating on other options for connecting flights to Hong Kong through other cities.
