SpiceJet is recognised as one of the cheapest airlines to fly within India. The airline has been looking to expand its international operations for quite some time now. Now, SpiceJet has been designated as the ‘Indian Scheduled Carrier’ for flights to the UK. This was announced by the airline on a regulatory filing today. This is a great boost for SpiceJet since it is looking to overturn all its losses by the help of international operations. This development comes right after the airline announced that it has become the designated ‘Indian Scheduled Carrier’ for flights to the US from India.

SpiceJet to Wet Lease Airbus A330
SpiceJet is planning to wet-lease an Airbus A330. Looking at the costs of wet-leasing an aircraft in the Indian aviation industry today, the airline will have to pay Rs 2 crore on a daily for that. It is too much money but it will solve one key problem of the airline. There is no wide-body aircraft in the lineup of SpiceJet planes. A wide-body aircraft will be able to go for long-haul flights. Thus the airline would be able to fly direct flights to places such as the UK and US.
SpiceJet has got the approval to fly to both the UK and the US through a bilateral air services agreement. In the regulatory filing, SpiceJet said, “We would like to inform you that in terms of the Air Services Agreement between the Government of India and the United Kingdom, SpiceJet has been designated as Indian scheduled carrier to operate on agreed services between India and the UK.”
It is good news for SpiceJet that it can fly to both the US and the UK. At the same time, all other airlines international flights are suspended since March 22, 2020. However, Air India is operating special flights to the UK and the US in order to bring people back home.
