IndiGo Adopts Eco-Friendly Initiatives to Save Fuel and Reduce Carbon Emission

IndiGo’s flight 6E 303 flying from Delhi to Hyderabad on April 29, 2019, flew using the concept of ‘Dispatch with no destination alternate’ saving fuel as well as the carbon emission, says a statement released by IndiGo Airlines.

There is a regulation under the aviation laws that the airlines have to plan an alternate destination in addition to its actual destination, and carry additional fuel to fly to both the destinations. This is primarily to handle the diversions of routes, in case of emergencies. However, when no such emergencies arise, the airlines end up carrying the additional load of fuel leading to heavier aircraft. The fuel consumption is more when the aircraft is heavier.

Under various environmental-friendly regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), there are provisions to overcome the alternate destination arrangement without compromising the safety issues. It suggests adopting performance-based regulation than perspective-based regulation. IndiGo, in support of Ministry of Civil aviation, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and Airports Authority of India (AAI) enforced such provisions and flew the aircraft without planning an alternate destination.

These eco-friendly initiatives will help us save 2100tonnes of ATF while reducing carbon emissions by 6615 tonnes per year. We have already completed five trial flights successfully in our endeavour to shift towards fuel-efficient, environment-friendly initiatives, effectively showcasing performance-based regulation, Captain Ashim Mittra, Senior Vice President – Flight Operations, IndiGo said.

According to IndiGo, it planned to operate seven trial flights out of which five have already completed their journey successfully.

IndiGo will stay committed to conducting all the business activities responsibly with due regard to environmental impact and sustainable performance, Captain Ashim Mittra added.

An Airbus A320/A321 aircraft from New Delhi – Hyderabad, flying under the principle of ‘Dispatch with no destination alternate’, would save at least 150 kgs of fuel for each flight planned without a destination alternate.
