People can now fly to international destinations from Indore. The Central Government has designated Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport, Indore of Madhya Pradesh with global status, an official statement revealed. International services from the airport will begin soon.
The announcement came as a follow-up to the gazette notification stating Indore airport as an authorized immigration check post for international flyers. The permission for customs was already granted.
In pursuance of sub-rule (b) of rule 3 of the Passport (Entry into India) Rules, 1950, the Central Government hereby designates Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport, Indore of Madhya Pradesh State as an authorized Immigration Check Post for entry into/exit from India with valid documents for all classes of passengers, the statement read.
For the services to begin, the airlines have to obtain clearance from the aviation authority Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Currently, around 54 domestic flights take off from the airport.
The airport was facilitating round the clock operation since March 2018. Named after Maharani Ahilya Bai Holkar of Indore, it is one of the busiest airports in Central India. The airport witnesses around 2,24 lakhs passenger footfall every month. The airport also has received Worlds Standardization Certification by the United Kingdom.
Infrastructure-wise, the airport is ready for some time. We are now waiting for the first international flight to take off. More international flights would soon come forward to introduce flights on international routes, Ranjan Mimani, Advisory Committee Member and former Chairman of CII, said to TOI.
The airport is expected to bring growth in travel and tourism, business and education sector in the region.
