The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad has started using Face Recognition System on a trial basis. The trial that began on 1 July 2019 will continue until 31 July 2019. According to some reports that quoted unnamed sources, more than 180 passengers have enrolled voluntarily for the program.
With the implementation of the system, the passengers can look into the camera established for the purpose and walk into the airports and for boarding. The system will automatically verify the face of the passenger based on the pre-stored data in the server.
For the purpose, FR Registration counters are established near the domestic departure gates no 1 and 3. The registration is available from 8 am to 8 pm for passengers who would like a new digital experience and is completely voluntary, Livemint quoted a source.
Currently, the face recognition system trials at Hyderabad Airport are being offered to passengers travelling with hand baggage only, and are those travellers visiting cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Vizag and Vijayawada.
Once the trial is recorded as successful, the system will be used for security checks as well.
Face Recognition System for Airports
Face Recognition System at airports are a part of the Centre’s DigiYatra program that intends to establish paperless services at the airport. Only for the first time, the passenger has to register at the counter showing a valid ID, contact details and get his face captured by the camera.
Once the first-time verification is over, a unique DigiYatra ID will be generated. From the next journey onwards, the passenger can go to the e-gate, get his boarding card scanned, and face the camera for identification. Upon successful verification, the passenger gets checked-in, and the e-gate opens all done in split seconds.
The system will clear the manual intervention, thus making the whole process of identification faster.
