IndiGo and Qatar Airways jointly said a strategic announcement between the two airlines would be announced on November 7. Right now, we're not sure what the announcement would be, but we're aware of the fact that Qatar Airways always showed its interest in investing IndiGo, which is currently the largest airline in India. Right after this announcement from the airlines on November 5, shares of IndiGo increased by almost 4%. Qatar Airways may establish a deal with IndiGo for codeshare and joint flights.
IndiGo and Qatar Airways Partnership Announcement on November 7
Aforesaid, Qatar Airways always showed its interest in investing IndiGo, but the popular international airline made it clear that they won't go for an equity share in India's largest airline. “We are very interested in IndiGo...We are talking to IndiGo of doing codeshare, joint flights but not yet an equity stake in the airline,” Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker informed Reuters back in August this year. The upcoming strategic announcement report between the two airlines also comes from Reuters itself.
Back in August 2019, Qatar Airways CEO also confirmed that IndiGo is not ready to take a foreign investor. But three months later, it seems like IndiGo is all set for a strategic partnership with Qatar Airways. That being said, both the airlines did not reveal what will the upcoming announcement be; As confirmed by Qatar Airways CEO, the partnership may be regarding codeshare agreement or stake sale or any other kind of partnership, of which details are unknown at the moment.
IndiGo Has About 40% Market Share in Indian Airline Market
In other news, IndiGo is currently the leading airline in India with a market share of over 40%. While IndiGo is ruling the Indian airline market, it lacks the international presence and the partnership with Qatar Airways could be regarding the same. IndiGo's CEO Ronojoy Dutta already expressed his views of making IndiGo an international airline.
