Guwahati Airport New Terminal Expected to Handle 10 Million Passengers Per Year

Guwahati Airport is going to get a new terminal very soon. The construction for the new terminal has been undertaken by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Cost for the new terminal of the Guwahati International Airport is Rs 1,232 crores. The construction is expected to finish in the next two years, meaning by June 2022. The Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport’s which is the Guwahati International Airport is expected to handle over 10 million passengers every year. More on the story ahead.

New Terminal at Guwahati International Airport Will Have 64 Check-In Counters

As of now, the Guwahati airport handles over six million passengers in a year. As per an ET report, this new terminal is expected to handle over 200 international and 4,300 domestic passengers during peak hours. The new terminal will have 64 check-in counters with 20 self-check-in kiosks and 10 aerobridges. One of the key things about this new terminal is that it will be energy-efficient.

AAI has said that the new terminal will be built up over an area of 1,02,500 square meters. With that, it will have two floors (the upper one for departures and the lower one for arrivals). The design of the terminal is built taking inspiration from Icarus which is a mythological figure. As for the roof of the airport, it is styled using the art of origami.

AAI said, “More than 38% of the project work is completed and the new terminal building is scheduled to be ready by June, 2022. Serving to the one of the fastest growing cities in India, Guwahati Airport also has connectivity with the South East Asia region and is going to attract more passengers in the coming years.”

Meanwhile Zurich Airport International and Uttar Pradesh government have come to terms with beginning the construction work for Noida airport in Jewar. Zurich Airport International has said that 90% of the traffic on the runway of Noida airport will be domestic only. Construction of the first phase of the airport is expected to finish by 2023.
