Delhi IGI Airport is The Fifth Busiest Airport in December, IndiGo Comes Eighth in Top Airline Category

As such, Atlanta remains in the first place with a seating capacity of 44 lakhs, followed by Dubai with 35.4 lakhs, Dallas/Fort Worth with 35.3 lakhs and Guangzhou with 35.1 lakh.

Delhi IGI Airport

Thanks to the revival of domestic air travel, Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI Airport), Delhi, has become the fifth busiest airport in the world this month, reveals the monthly ranking released by the aviation consultancy OAG. The airports in Atlanta, Dubai, Dallas Forth Worth and Guangzhou are ahead of IGI Airport.

Busiest global airports

OAG calculates the top 10 Busiest Global Airports worldwide using total airline capacity by considering both the domestic and international flights. As such, Atlanta remains in the first place with a seating capacity of 44 lakhs, followed by Dubai with 35.4 lakhs, Dallas/Fort Worth with 35.3 lakhs and Guangzhou with 35.1 lakh. IGI Airport reported a seating capacity of 33.5 lakhs and stood fifth. Eight of the Top 20 airports are in the USA.

The statistics by OAG also says that the global seating capacity continues to recover, with 11.7% more seats in the market in December 2021 than in November 2021. The most significant increases are being made in Asia and Southwest Pacific. The airlines in South East Asia will operate 35.5% more seats this month compared to last month, while capacity in Southwest Pacific is growing by 70.3% as travel restrictions are relaxed.

Among the top country pairs, Mexico-US, Spain-UK, Canada-USA and UAE-India are the four biggest country pairs for international travel this month. Top country pairs are those international country pairs with the most seat capacity.

Top airlines

India’s budget carrier IndiGo occupied the eighth position in the top twenty airline category by flying 47,947 flights in December 2021. American Airlines tops the list with 1.74 lakh flights, followed by Delta Airlines with 1.27 lakhs airlines. United Airlines stands third by with a slightly lower number of 1.26 lakhs. Southwest Airlines comes fifth with 99, 757 flights. All top four are US airlines.

There are two Chinese airlines – China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines – in the fifth and sixth positions with 65,837 and 63, 173 flights. Irish airline Ryanair reported 63,030 flights in December 2021 and came to the seventh position prior to India’s IndiGo Airlines. Ryanair is the airline that operated the most capacity relative to their equivalent 2019 position, with 5.2% more flights this month than in December 2019.
